As part of my 'head stuff' for five, I've been writing a thousand-odd word essay about truth and other such - often touched - topics in photography.
In one portion I talk about the work of Walker Evans and Philip-Lorca diCorcia. The following image touches very much on some of the themes of context, cropping and how we 'read' an image.
The first image is how - almost without exception - the image is shown. Given Evan's comments about the project being focussed on 'pure' recording, it thus falls out of favour conceptually.
I find the smirk on the neighbouring man adds a (queasy) poetry to an image/project which otherwise could be looked at as a New Yorker style 'typology'.
