I was reading an article by Luc Sante in the latest edition of Aperture (Folk Photography - The American Real-Photo Postcard) and it prompted me to dig around in the LOC again. It's endlessly fascinating trawling through the archive although occasionally a bit disturbing.
The images are mostly available at very high resolutions so they can push pass the micro 'looks' that I tend to over subscribe to.
