Given that we are juggling numbers for potential studios, I have been thinking about the balance been prosperity and cultural 'progression'. Perth has it's share of 'for lease' signs around but it's still doing 'too' well.
Prices need to drop to exactly the 'right' price so that artists can move in and generate energy. If it drops too far, the institutions collapse and cities stagnate. The opposite also causes ironically the same problems. This is very much the case in Perth which has notoriously driven artists - with a conservative, iron dust-coated shovel - out of the inner city.
Added to this is a consumer-driven focus on aspiring to shopping nirvana to 'cure' all ills.
