On Friday we had friends here for a visit and in amongst other things we got on to the ideas and virtues of art as commodity. That is, financially and logistically accessible 'take aways' and whether these might devalue the source 'product'.
Inevitably art versus design was discussed and how the original intent of the maker colours the eventual product.
It might have been the wine talking but I stumbled on to the idea that both art and design can simultaneously be translations and translators of experience.
That is to say that whilst they might offer 'answers', they can also provide a tool set for viewers to engage with something afresh.
